It's Raining Postcards!

Nevada USA

These two wonderful postcards come from Wendy C in Nevada. She writes: My family has been here in Las Vegas since the 1800's! It is very hot and dry here in the desert. We get many visitors too. I am 47 years old married with 3 children. I love exchanging postcards like you do and learning about the world and my own beautiful country. Expect more!!!   ღ Wendy C.

Postcard #2 Reads:  Greetings from the Grand Canyon! We are lucky in Las Vegas to be so close to the incredible Grand Canyon. The northern rim is in Utah and the mountains while the southern rim is in Arizona in the desert. Many tours by helicopter or bus leave from Las Vegas everyday. It is amazing!!! There is and Indian (Native American) tribe that lives at the bottom of the Canyon. From Wendy C.

Many thanks Wendy C!

More Facts about this tribe:

Havasuw `Baaja, the people of the blue green waters, are the traditional guardians of the Grand Canyon. Related to the Yuman, the Havasupai have from the beginning, inhabited the Grand Canyon and its environs.
By 1919 with the establishment of the Grand Canyon National Park, the Tribe was restricted to 518 acres, 5 miles wide and 12 miles long in a side canyon. The Tribe has since had returned to them 188,077 acres of their former homelands which makes up their reservation today.
The Havasupai Reservation is located in Coconino County, at the southwest corner of the Grand Canyon National Park. The nearest community to the Reservation is Peach Springs, 64 miles southwest from Hualapai Hilltop.
The Havasupai Reservation consists of plateau country, dissected with deep, scenic canyons characteristic of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. Notable geographic features include "The Great Thumb," Long Mesa, and Tenderfoot Mesa, which converge on the Coconino Plateau at the south end of the reservation.
Havasu (Cataract) Canyon, now the permanent home of the Havasupai Indian Tribe, is internationally known for its blue water and spectacular water falls adorned with travertine columns, shelves and skirts. Topography of the plateau areas varies from rolling, gentle slopes, to escarpments of outcrops of the Kaibab Limestone.
The population for the Havasupai Tribe is 639 with a median age of 24.8 years. The largest employer of the tribal members on the reservation is the Tribe. The main occupation of individual members is packing and working for tribal enterprises (tourism).
The Havasuw `Baaja, draw their strength from the land, which is sacred. Visitors are asked to preserve the magnificence of the Havasupai homeland and respect their natural resources which contribute to their spiritual direction. All visitors are asked to leave their liquor, drugs, weapons and pets at home and to take their trash out of the canyon.
The best way to reach Havasupai is from Highway 66, six miles east of Peach Springs, onto Indian Route 18, a 64 mile road to Hualapai Hilltop. From the Hilltop parking lot there is an eight mile trail to Supai Village. This trail may be traveled either by foot or horse.

Welcome to the Destination Zermatt - Matterhorn

This postcard comes to us from Christophe S. in Switzerland. He writes: Hello...thank you for your last postcard. Here is a multiview of a touristic mountain river in Zermatt ( South of the country). The sound of this river among the cliff is wonderful!Have a nice day.

According to (Welcome to the Destination Zermatt - Matterhorn) Gornerschlucht… or Gorner Gorge is the name of the unique wonder of Nature in the immediate vicinity of the Blatten hamlet. It was eroded by the Gornervispe river after the last Ice Age, and was first opened up in the years 1886/87. There are now two ways of crossing the gorge: the upper part of the Gornerschlucht can be crossed in three to four hours with the aid of a mountain guide, as a breathtaking adventure, or the lower part of the Gornerschlucht can be crossed without special equipment using the installation that dates back to 1886/87. On both routes, you will experience the Gornervispe surging around you. The rock here, serpentinite, is around 220 million years old. A natural spectacle, only 15 minutes from Zermatt.

Gila Monster

What is a Gila Monster you might ask? The Gila Monster can be found in the Sonoran Desert in Phoenix, Arizona area. The Gila Monster's bite, although rarely fatal to humans, serves to overpower animal predators and prey. The poison is not injected like that of a snake, but flows into the open wound as the lizard chews on the victim. Our postcrosser Sue says she has never seen one even though she enjoys hiking through the dessert, which is very hot and very dry with an average of 7 inches of rain per YEAR. Happy Postcrossing! Thank you Sue

Madeira, Portugal

History of Madeira Island

When the Infante Dom Henrique, better known in English as Prince Henry the Navigator, gathered together the finest cartographers and navigators of Portugal at the beginning of the 15th century, his plan was to extend the knowledge of the coast of West Africa. Armed only with square-rigged ships, compass, hourglass and astrolabe, the initial sea captains were severely handicapped in their endeavors. But in the course of their ventures, the finest hour of Portuguese maritime history, luck brought greater riches than the purities of science and logic.

Two young sea captains, João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira, were blown off course on their journey around the African coast and after many days at sea found land on a small island that they named Porto Santo - the very first of the many discoveries made by Henry's school of navigation. On reporting to Henry they were promptly ordered to return and colonize the island. The year was 1419.
Seductive as are the charms of the golden sands of Porto Santo it seems somewhat incredible today that it took a further year before the next discovery was made. The captains had reported a dark mass of clouds visible on the southern horizon. They were now encouraged to explore this foreboding mass. As theories to whether the world was flat had yet to be completely disproved, it took an enormous leap of faith to cross the traverse.

As they approached, the huge Atlantic rollers breaking along the north coast and the boiling turbulence of the cross currents at the Ponta de São Lourenço cannot have eased the concern of the superstitious sailors. But on rounding the headland they discovered the bay of Machico, the threshold to the heavily forested island that they named Madeira. Prince Henry immediately organized the colonization of the island, with the first families coming from the Algarve region of Portugal.

Today the statue of Zarco looks down on the descendants of the first colonizers as they navigate the corner in front of the Bank of Portugal building in downtown Funchal. As the Portuguese overseas possessions have shrunk, so the relative significance of this first of the great discoveries has gained in importance. To find a needle in a haystack can be trying, but to find Porto Santo in an Atlantic storm was a lucky prize indeed.

Auckland by Night

Hello from New Zealand! This postcard shows Auckland city at night. Auckland is New Zealand's largest city and is in the North Island. Even though it's the biggest city, our capital city is Wellington. In this postcard you can see the sky tower, which is the tallest building in the Southern hemisphere. You can see all around Auckland from the top and it has glass floors which are really scary to stand on (how exciting!) Auckland is known as the "city of sails" because it has thousands of yachts and boats docked at Auckland's many marinas. New Zealand has a population of 4 million people which is quite small compared to the USA!! I live in a small town called Pukekohe (Pook-he-ko-ee) which is just south of Auckland and is a town known for growing vegetables. I hope you enjoyed the card from New Zealand (indeed we did) and it might inspire you to visit New Zealand one day - Ashley

That is a good college. Happy Postcrossing.

The Indian Version...

Many thanks to a swapper by the name of Mrs. Amy B. We had a wonderful postcard exchange with you. This postcard you have sent us from Oklahoma features The Indian Version the the twenty- third Psalm:

The GREAT FATHER above a SHEPHERD CHIEF is.
I am His and with Him I want not.
He throws out to me a rope and the name of the rope is love
and He draws me to where the grass is green and the water is not dangerous,
and I eat and lie down and am satisfied.
Sometimes my heart is very weak and falls down
but He lifts me up again draws me into a good road.
His name is WONDERFUL .
Sometimes, it may be very soon, it may be a long long time,
He will draw me into a valley.
It is dark there, but I'll be afraid not,
for it is between those mountains that the SHEPHERD CHIEF will meet me
and the hunger that I have in my heart all through life will be satisfied.
Sometimes he makes the love rope into a whip,
but afterwards He gives me a staff to lean upon.
He spreads a table before me with all kinds of foods.
He puts His hand upon my head and all the " tired " is gone.
My cup he fills till it runs over.
What I tell is true. I lie not.
These roads that are "away ahead" will stay with me
through this life and after;
and afterwards I will go to live in the Big Teepee
and sit down with the SHEPHERD CHIEF forever.

(Congratulations we hope you enjoy it be sure to visit the famous Biltmore Estates!) Anyway , the town I live in now is a small victorian town built into the hillsides in the Ozark Mountains. A fact about Eureka Sprinks, Arkansas... this town has been featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not more than any other US (United States) town! Peace, Tracy

Wow Tracy we have many things in common for one thing the fun fact about Myrtle beach, NC I always tell everyone I send a South Carolina postcard to is that they are home to a Ripley's Believe It or Not museum! Also we live so close I am sure one day we will meet. We haven't yet been to Asheville, NC which is a few hours away but my mother has been begging to see the Biltmore Estates a well known Vanderbilt Home http://www.biltmore.com/visit. George Vanderbilt’s 8,000-acre estate. Mr. Vanderbilt created Biltmore as an escape from everyday life. Now, his descendants invite you to enjoy his legacy of hospitality. Thanks again Tracy.

Greetings to you both from Bridlington, a small seaside town, population 35,000. Situated on the East coast of Yorkshire, once a thriving fishing providence but now the main industry is tourism. Paris!

Our good friend Nelson C., sent us a wonderful gift, our very first postcard from PARIS, FRANCE! This postcard is as artistic as the person who sent it ;-) Thank so very much for searching so hard for the other postcards I am sure someday it will turn up.This postcard shows the famous Le Pont Alexandre III. Built in 1900 for the Universal Exhibition, the Pont Alexandre-III takes its name from the Russian emperor who laid the first stone. It's a magnificent example of art nouveau style decorated with nymphs, cherubs and other sea monsters. The four golden statues depict Art, Commerce, Industry and the Sciences. At the time of its construction, the authorities would not allow the ornamentation to obscure the view of the Champs-Élysees or the Invalides - happily for us the view is still wonderful! This superb example of 19th-century engineering crosses the Seine between the Invalides and the Grand Palais. It is definitely one of the most beautiful bridges in Paris. Be well good friend and safe travels.

Malaysia (Unknown Sender)

Many thanks for these five postcards from Malaysia. I am unsure of who the sender is so we will happily thank you here. Thank you.
Each of the postcards show something different in Malaysia. From a rubber tapper at work early in the morning on the plantation, to the city of Kuala Lumpur, the capital skyline, which is the financial and commercial center of the nation. Also shown adorned with painted roof resembling a horn, the bullock cart which was once a popular for of transport in Malacca; now you can still take a ride on it at Ayer Keroh. A giant leatherback turtle climbs ashore to lay eggs (This we learned on Go Diego Go but its even better to see a real one on our postcards, many thanks.) And finally we see the Orange Utan or " Man of the forest" found only on the island of Borneo, its an endangered species fully protected in Malaysia. Thank you mystery person for these very interesting postcards ;-)
